Mid-LevelMotorbike Tour to Upper Mustang takes you to the last remaining Tibetan monarchy, which is located in Trans Himalayan Area, and only a few travelers every year are permitted to visit this largely undiscovered territory.
People here are Tibetan and Thakali, so the region is culturally varied. Upper Mustang is a mixed bag of cultural fusion between Tibetan and Nepalese.
Our motorbike tour takes you to the sideways curved valleys, glacier lakes to observe, and to the close proximity of the high Himalayan Mountains, which we bet will surprise you. Plus, the mountain people’s warm hearts and bright smiles make everything your biking experience worthwhile.
Their pleasant greetings and gestures will make you feel comfortable, encouraging you to want to stay. For every motorbike trip lover, the Mustang excursion on the bike will be one of the nicest journeys they’ve ever made.
We ride from Kathmandu to Lo-Manthang, Upper Mustang’s old walled city, then return, all the way to Kathmandu. As you go from Jomsom to Lo Manthang, you will pass by many villages such as Eklo Bhatti and Tangbe, etc. Travelers are still not allowed to enter Upper Mustang. As a result, there are fewer tourists, giving those who do go the sensation of doing something unique and different. The terrain is likewise one-of-a-kind and unlike any other.
Why a Motorbike Tour is the Ultimate Way to Explore Upper Mustang
Let’s be honest – most travelers stick to hiking in Nepal. But, even though you have heard about it less, biking adventures in Nepal are amazing. For a biker, roaring through the red canyons on two wheels with the blowing wind on their face and the mighty mountains in the background is an experience they’ll never forget.
If you love a biking adventure, you’re not making a mistake with this ride. Off-roads, pitched highways, river crossings, narrow roads on hills, stunning mountain views, what more could you possibly want?
It’s raw, it’s real, and it’s the closest you’ll get to feeling like a modern-day Himalayan explorer.
Trip Highlights
- Ride through the ancient kingdom of Upper Mustang, once forbidden to outsiders.

- Explore the ancient city of Lo Manthang and its centuries-old monasteries.
- Visit the sacred Muktinath Temple and the high-altitude desert villages of Mustang.

- Cross dramatic river gorges and high mountain passes with a support crew in tow.
The Iconic Mustang Terrain: What You Need to Know
Let’s not sugarcoat it, this isn’t a Sunday cruise. The trails mix moon-like dust bowls, rocky riverbeds, and heart-pounding 4,000m passes. But we use Royal Enfield Himalayans, built for these conditions. Also, we have local mechanics on standby who’s been fixing bikes here since he was 14.
You’ll learn to read the terrain like a proper Nepali rider by the end of it. Just don’t expect the ride to be a walk in the park.
Altitude, Safety, and Acclimatization Tips
- Riding above 3,000 meters brings thin air and colder temperatures. Here’s how to stay safe:
- Take acclimatization breaks, especially in Kagbeni and Lo Manthang.
- Stay hydrated and eat warm, carb-rich meals.
- Travel with a first-aid kit and altitude sickness medication.
- Avoid alcohol and smoking while ascending.
- Ride cautiously as the gravel roads, steep drops, and dust can be challenging

After such a long day, the night would be spent at Lomang-thang.

Scenic Ride continues to Marpha via Muktinath
Today we will drive to Marpha via Muktinath shrine, at an elevation of 3,800 meters, which is one of the most sacred destinations. Because it is described in the Vishnu Purana as well as Buddhist writings, it is significant to both Hindus and Buddhists. The place is also recognized as a Shakti Peeth. The shrine is encircled by 108 holy taps, and it is thought that soaking in all of them will purify the spirit and mind completely. It is a beautiful site to witness on the journey to Marpha. The drive continues through Kagbeni and Jomsom to Marpha, where you will spend the night.
Ride Back to Pokhara
We’ll return to Pokhara via Larjung, Kalopani, Ghasa, and Beni, where we’ll have lunch before continuing on to Kusma. It is made primarily of rocky trails and mud tracks that run parallel to the Kali-Gandaki River, rather than a constructed road.

If you have some free time, ask your guide to take you to the World Peace Pagoda, where you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the mountains, valley, and lake all at once. For the night stay in Pokhara, hotel arrangements will be planned in advance so that you can be in the most comfortable condition possible.

Frequently Asked Questions
You don’t have to be a pro, but some off-road experience really helps. The terrain includes dusty tracks, loose gravel, river crossings, and winding mountain roads If you’re comfortable riding on uneven surfaces and can handle a bike with good control, you’ll do just fine. It’s a challenging but deeply rewarding ride, especially with the right guide and support team.
Most Upper Mustang motorbike tours use Royal Enfield 411 Himalayan or Classic 500 models—well-suited for high altitude and rough Himalayan terrain. These bikes offer the right balance of power, comfort, and durability for long rides on mixed surfaces. Some companies may also offer KTM or dirt bike options if you prefer a lighter, more agile ride.
The best months are April to June and September to November, when the roads are dry, skies are clear, and the weather is stable. Upper Mustang lies in the rain shadow of the Himalayas, so it’s actually rideable even during monsoon season—but you’ll still want to avoid July and August due to slippery trails and landslide risks in lower areas.
Your ride usually begins in Kathmandu or Pokhara, heading through Tatopani, Jomsom, and Kagbeni, before entering the restricted area of Upper Mustang. From there, you’ll climb towards Lo Manthang, the ancient walled kingdom, passing wind-eroded cliffs, centuries-old monasteries, and breathtaking desert landscapes. Highlights include riding past Chele La, exploring the Chhoser cave dwellings, and sharing a tea with locals in Tibetan-style villages.
Here’s a practical packing list tailored to high-altitude motorbike adventures:
- Full riding gear: helmet, riding jacket, gloves, knee guards, and durable boots
- Layered clothing for changing temperatures (warm fleece, thermal base layers, windproof outer layer)
- Dust mask or buff for dry trails
- Sunglasses and SPF (sunlight is strong at altitude)
- Hydration pack or refillable bottle
- Basic tool kit
