Frequently Asked Questions
The best time to explore Upper Mustang by jeep is during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). These seasons offer clear skies, dry roads, and breathtaking mountain views. Monsoon months (June to August) bring rain and occasional landslides, while winter (December to February) can make the high-altitude roads icy and less accessible.
Since Upper Mustang is a restricted area, you’ll need three main permits:
- Restricted Area Permit (RAP)
- Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)
- TIMS Card – required for overland travel in Annapurna region
These permits must be arranged through a government-registered travel agency in Nepal. The paperwork might sound daunting but we’ll take care of it for you.
Expect a true Himalayan adventure! There are sections of the road that are unpaved and dusty, with some rough, bumpy sections and river crossings. Altitude is another factor—Lo Manthang sits at nearly 3,840 meters, so some travelers may feel mild symptoms like a headache or fatigue. Staying hydrated, avoiding alcohol, and gradually increasing your activity level helps your body adjust.
The tour usually begins in Kathmandu, with a drive or flight to Pokhara, then heads to Jomsom and Kagbeni, the official entry point to Upper Mustang. From there, your 4WD journey continues through traditional Tibetan-influenced villages like Chhusang, Syangboche, and Tsarang, finally reaching the ancient walled city of Lo Manthang. Popular side trips include the Chhoser Caves, Ghar Gompa, and the stunning views from Chele La Pass.
A Jeep Tour is perfect if you want to experience Mustang’s culture and landscapes without the physical demands of a long trek. You’ll still visit ancient monasteries, remote villages, and dramatic landscapes—but in less time and with more comfort. It’s ideal for families, older travelers, or anyone short on time who still wants the full Upper Mustang experience.
Pack for a mix of sunshine, wind, and chilly nights. Here’s a quick checklist:
- Layered clothing (T-shirts, fleece, down jacket)
- Comfortable walking shoes or light boots
- Warm hat and gloves (especially for early mornings and nights)
- Dust mask or scarf (for dry, windy roads)
- Sunglasses and sunscreen
- Refillable water bottle
- A small daypack for local hikes and temple visits
