Manaslu Expedition

Mountain of the Spirit” Manaslu in Sanskrit has enough meaning to inspire the actual daring spirit in you to ascend this great peak. Manaslu is derived from the Sanskrit word manasa, meaning “intellect” or “soul”. Mount Manaslu, in the Mansiri Himal, a little but high subrange of the Himalayas in north-central Nepal roughly 100 km north west of Kathmandu, is the eighth highest mountain in the world at 8, 163m (26,781ft). For those who have past high altitude treks under their purview, this is a serious climbing trip. Comparatively to an ascent of the neighbor Cho Oyu (8,188m), or Shishapangma (8,027m), this complex climb is very taxing.

Other names for the Mansiri range are the Manaslu Himal or the Gurkha Massif. Both falling in the top 20 highest mountains worldwide, Manaslu Himal also consists of Himalchuli (7,893m/25,856ft) and Ngadi Chuli (7,871m/25,823ft). Manaslu’s elevation of 7,000 meters/23,000 feet above the floor of the Marsyangdi Valley lends it its skyline prominence. It is sixty-four km east of Mount Annapurna.

Mt. Manaslu 8163 meter, It was first climbed in 1953 by a Japanese team north face expedition. Its name comes from the Sanskrit word manias, meaning “intellect” or “soul”. Just as the British considered Everest their mountain, Manaslu 8,163 meter has been always regarded as the “Japanese mountain” by the Japanese; because of the Japanese people’s first conquered on its Top.

Manaslu, HW Tillman and Jimmy Roberts photographed Manaslu during a trek in 1950. But the first real survey of the peak was made by a Japanese expedition in 1952. A Japanese team made the first serious attempt on the peak from the Budi Gandaki valley in 1953 from the north face. When another team followed in 1954, the villagers of Sama gaon told them that the first team had been responsible for an avalanche that destroyed a monastery & refused to let the 1954 expedition to climb. The expedition set off to climb Ganesh Himalaya instead.

Despite a big donation for rebuilding the monastery following expeditions were also done amidst hostility and mistrust, such as the Japanese expedition that in 1956 made the first ascent. Another successful Japanese expedition was in 1971. A South Korean attempt was followed in 1971 by a disastrous avalanche, in April 1972 killing five climbers. And 10 Sherpas ended the second made the fourth ascent of mount Manaslu, as a member of a Tyrolean expedition that climbed from the Marshyangdi valley in 1972. So Manaslu is one of the most renowned lovely mountains in the world to which many foreign enthusiasts climb very curiously.
