Poon Hill trekking in Nepal is one of the most accessible treks in the Himalayas with short, rewarding tracks intermingling through lush foothills and culture villages.
Poon Hill trek is a moderate multi-day trek through lush rhododendron forests and pleasant settlements of Gurung people like Ghandruk (1,900 m) and Ghorepani (2,874 m) on way, harmonizing nature’s beauty with authentic cultural experiences-Himalayan Hikes. Poon Hill view at 3,210 m offers trekkers an unobstructed 360° panorama view of Himalaya giant Dhaulagiri (8,167 m), Annapurna I (8,091 m), and Machhapuchhre (6,993 m) basking at sunrise’s early rays. World famous for its breathtaking sunrises, sunlight on snow-peaked mountains is an unforgettable phenomenon every day.
The hike takes a total distance of approximately 43 km (27 miles) over four or six days, and successfully achieves perfect balance between physical exertion and immersing in local culture. It rewards every step upwards with stunning mountain vistas and exposure to local ways of living. Evenings are passed in cordial teahouses, with unpretentious lodges dishing out hearty Nepali breakfasts and dinners-inspiring bonding among trekkers and hearty hospitality from local families. Tracks follow riversides, bamboo jungles, and rhododendron-laden sub-tropical forests every spring along the way, showing constantly changing tapestries of color and aroma.
From breathtaking mountain scenery to deeper cultural immersions in Gurung culture, or perhaps just a wonderful rejuvenating day out into nature. This trek should fulfill its aspirations as a rich exploration into the very heart of ecology and culture in Nepal. This blog lays the platform for systematic, day-by-day descriptive review of lakeside picnics, scenic flights, and snaking mountain trails. They all lead on to a sunrise that gives new breath to Poon Hill and lazy walks in the lakeside beauty of Pokhara.
The journey begins with an awe-inspiring 25-minute flight from Tribhuvan Airport in Kathmandu to Pokhara, with breathtaking scenery over the terracing and snow-topped mountains. Lunch at one of Pokhara’s lakeside eateries, whose decks at eye level gaze out over Phewa Lake’s glassy surface, reflecting Machhapuchhre’s snows.
Reinvigorated by lunch, an about two-hour drive by jeep north to Kimche, traditional entry point for the Annapurna trail, begins. A 1.5-hour ascent on foot from Kimche descends twisting trails through subtropical forests to a hidden Gurung village at 1,900 m, where mountain scenery and hospitality offer a warm welcome to days ahead.
The day begins with a local breakfast at a tea house followed by trekking to Tadapani, a tranquil 2,630m high village. The 4–5 hour trek follows twisting ridges and dense rhododendron forests with glimpses along the way of Annapurna South and Machhapuchhre before arriving at Tadapani’s stone lodges – perfect for lunch and foot resting.
On day three, a breakfast at a tea-house is followed by the most breathtaking part: a 5–6 hour hike through bamboo country and river valleys to Ghorepani, at 2,874m with a 360° panorama over adjacent peaks.
Along the way, trekkers halt briefly at Deurali Danda (3,090m) in pines, where the horizon is cut in relief by saw-edged mountain profiles. After overnight at Ghorepani, day four’s early morning ascent to Poon Hill at 3,210m gives early starters a 360° panorama over Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and other Himalayan giants at sunrise. Three hours down trail through Banthanti leads trekkers back to waiting transport for a drive down to Pokhara.
Day five in Pokhara unearths the natural and cultural attractions of the city. The day starts at David’s Fall cascading down into a deep cave. Near Gupteshwor Cave, its tunnel-like formations and stalactites lure people to explore dark arches.
The International Mountain Museum gives an insider’s glimpse into mountaineering history, Sherpa culture, and Everest expeditions. Finally, a tranquil boat ride on Phewa Lake amidst the background hills and Fishtail silhouette is a tranquil ending before having dinner at a lakeside restaurant.
On your final day, a domestic flight takes you back to Kathmandu early, with pre-flight transfers wrapping up your mountain adventure in a convenient way.
