Author Himalayan Holidays Nepal

Winter in Nepal offers clear skies, fresh air, and beautiful mountain views. With mild weather in lower regions, it is a great season for trekking.

Winter in Nepal lasts from December to February. Many tourists think winter here means lots of snow and freezing cold, but that’s not true in most parts of Nepal.

Why Winter is Great for Trekking in Nepal

While those countries get cold air from the North Pole, making their winters very cold and snowy, Nepal is protected by the Himalayas and is much farther south. So, winter here is much milder. Snow mostly falls in higher mountains, but lower areas stay dry, sunny, and great for trekking.

Winter in Nepal is all about clear blue skies and beautiful snowy mountain scenery. The air is fresh and the Mountain View is very clear; you might even see far off peaks shining in the sun.

Mardi Himal Trek

Mardi Himal trek is a short trail near Pokhara that still gives a great view of the Himalayas. The path climbs up under a huge mountain, Machapuchare with an altitude of 4,500m. You must pass through thick green forest and small farms to get the gigantic view of Machapuchare. You get to stand at high viewpoints with a nearly 360 degree view of snow covered peaks.

  • Panoramic Snowy Peaks: You see Machapuchare and Annapurna South lit up in the winter sun.
  • Forests and Villages: The path winds through green forests and small Gurung villages where people are happy to share stories and snacks.
  • Short and Scenic: It’s only a few days, so it’s great for beginners. The winter sky is clear and the route has few people, so you feel like you have nature all to yourself.
  • Tips: Layer up and wear solid winter boots.

Langtang Valley Trek/ Gosaikunda (Langtang Region)

The Langtang Valley trek is a moderate journey from north of Kathmandu. You start your trail from a lush jungle and climb up to Kyanjin Gompa which is located 3,800 meters up. In January, the valley generally looks like a winter wonderland. The air is fresh and you get an amazing view of Langtang Lirung and Ganesh Himal covered in snow. When you pass through you will find lush pine forest and Tamang village where people are very friendly.

  • Snow-Capped Peaks: You will get a chance to experience the breathtaking view of Langtang Lirung and Ganesh Himal, both covered in snow.
  • Quiet Trekking: The number of trekkers are less, so the travel and village feels calm.
  • Friendly Villages: You pass through Tamang and Sherpa villages. When you pass through the villages you should try yak cheese and see the traditional monasteries.
  • Hot Springs: At the end of Langtang trek, you can take an extra time to dip yourself in a natural hot springs to relax your muscles.
  • Tips: Layer up and wear solid trekking boots.

From the ABC Basecamp you can look up at giant peaks such as Annapurna I, Annapurna south, Machapuchare, all sparkling in the sun.

  • 360° Mountain View: From the ABC base camp you see Annapurna I, II, Machapuchare and other peaks.

Everest Base Camp Trek (Everest Region)

The Everest Base camp is one of the most iconic adventures in the world. It’s a dream journey for hikers, leading right to the foot of the world’s highest peak. The trek starts with an exciting flight from Lukla and continues through rhododendron forest and charming Sherpa town at Namche Bazaar and Tengboche. Very few people trek to EBC in the cold season, so the path is quiet and serene. You should be prepared for freezing days and nights.

  • Everest Up Close: On clear days you will often see the summit of Mount Everest standing tall above all other peaks, a breathtaking view that makes every step worth it.
  • Quiet Trails: Hardly anyone treks EBC in winter due to off season, so you might have the trail almost to yourself.
  • Bright, Clear Days: Winter days are usually dry and sunny, offering perfect mountain views. The cold might bite a little, but the clean air and quiet paths more than make up for it.
  • Be flexible: Winter weather can be unpredictable. Plan extra days in case of flight delays or road closures.

Shey Phoksundo Trek

The Shey Phoksundo trek is one of the hidden treasures in Western Nepal. This trek gives you an opportunity to visit places where not many sets foot, places which are Tibetan in culture. The expedition gives you a breathtaking view of the lake Phoksundo. This lake is considered one of the most beautiful and deepest alpine lakes in Nepal with a magnificent turquoise blue colour. Set in the Dolpa district, a very isolated and mysterious place, it feels much more than a simple visit.

  • Phoksundo Lake Views: You will be stunned by the turquoise clear water of Shey Phoksundo, surrounded by dense forests of pines.
  • Quiet and Remote: This place is not much trekked by anyone, especially in winter. One finds all peace for trekking. The beauty of Dolpa is, however, amplified by the silence and stillness of the mountains.
  • Clear Sky, Cold Air: The weather could sometimes get cold, but the dry air of winter makes the sky extremely clear, offering views of surrounding peaks nestled in deep valleys. The best trek for somebody who is seeking complete solitude with raw natural beauty around.

Tilicho Lake Trek

Tilicho Lake is listed amongst the highest lakes at a height of 4,919 meters. It introduces calamity into the Annapurna region. The path breaks away from the classical Annapurna circuit and takes you across changing scenery from green hills and forests, slowly turning into dry, rocky terrain. The higher you climb, the more the scenery changes step by step, finally reaching the breathtaking Tilicho Lake, a place that takes your breath away.

  • High-Altitude Lake: Tilicho’s icy blue waters surrounded by snowy mountains. It looks like a shining gem in a dry, rocky place high up in the mountains. Being there feels like you’re on another planet.
  • Less Crowded Path: The route is quieter, especially in winter. You will pass a few fellow trekkers but plenty of amazing scenery.
